CHENNAI EXPRESS HITS-BREAKS THE IDIOTS


 Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express has done it. In 21 days — plus paid previews — his latest release, which is still running, has broken the four-year-old record held by Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots.

The film has crossed the coveted `202.57-crore mark, which was the highest Indian theatrical revenue for a Bollywood film after deduction of tax.

Trade sources say that CE continues like an unbridled horse and will set new benchmarks.Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, which released a week later, found it hard to hold up to the pace of CE after the first three days. The film, with Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan, has collected around 57.5 crore in the last 14 days, with a limited release on day one (August 15).

Is Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express the biggest hit of all time? Has it really beaten Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots, which has been the record-holder till date?

All sorts of box office figures have been thrown about, so we decided to investigate the matter.

Some trade analysts claim the 3 Idiots record of Rs 202.46 crores has been broken, while others say Chennai Express touched the Rs 200 crore mark only on August 28.

“Chennai Express has managed to collect Rs 201.15 crores till August 28. That's just a crore short of the record held by 3 Idiots," says trade analyst Amul Mohan. “It’s just a matter of time before the film becomes the new benchmark.”

The Chennai Express team, meanwhile, claimed the film had broken the 3 Idiotsrecord on August 24 itself.

Shah Rukh Khan, in a tweet, called Chennai Express the number one film in the history of Hindi movies, while trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that Chennai Express headed the list of the biggest grossers in Hindi cinema.

According to Adarsh, Chennai Express raked in Rs 216.86 crores till August 28.

While discussing the box office figures of the two films, it's useful to keep in mind that while Chennai Express released in more than 3,500 screens in India and charged higher ticket prices, 3 Idiots released in approximately 1,800 screens, nearly half the number of the former.

 Despite making repeated attempts Shah Rukh's publicist remained unavailable for this report while an official from co-producer UTV-Disney refused to divulge the official box office figures. Media professional and industry observer Abhijit Mhamunkar claims that Chennai Express has earned Rs 201 crores so far. "Chennai Express will surely beat 3 Idiots' s record. But why are the makers of the film in a hurry to announce it?" he asks.

It is ironical, but true, that the first part of the film, starring Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi, had ended its box-office run at around 58 crore, but that was three years ago. Franck Ribery could become the first Bundesliga player to be crowned UEFA Player of the Year award since Matthias Sammer in 1996 when the winner of the accolade is announced in Monaco on Thursday night.Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for 2012/13 ahead of the usual contenders Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was recognition for his part in Bayern’s unprecedented Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble.

The Frenchman was the first player from a club other than Barcelona or Real Madrid to make the final three since the award was established by European soccer’s governing body in 2011.

Argentina’s Messi won the inaugural award followed by Spaniard Andres Iniesta, his Barcelona team mate, last year.

Messi and Real Madrid’s Portugal forward Ronaldo had also both made the last three in each of the two previous years.

The France international is being tipped to land the trophy after an impressive year in both domestic and European competition - but faces stiff competition from Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ribery told Bundesliga.de: "Last season was perfect, so my chances are certainly good. I was consistent. I've done everything I can. I'm tense, but also relaxed. There are not many people out there that would deny me the prize."

"I would be very happy and very proud. I've already been French Footballer of the Year twice before [in 2007 and 2008], but have yet to receive international recognition. In that respect, it'd be great."

The winger said that both Messi and Ronaldo were fantastic players, who "scored an unbelievable number of goals" for "a number of years". He added: "I'm more of a provider, even though I chip in with the odd goal like last Saturday against Nuremberg.

Ribery's chances of winning the award, which is decided in a live vote by journalists during the Champions League group stage draw, have been aided by the fact Ronaldo has decided to snub the event to play in Madrid's low-profile Trofeo Teresa Herrera friendly at Deportivo La Coruna.

"It is a pity that all is happening at the same time, but Cristiano does not have the gift of bilocation," said a Real Madrid spokesperson. "We would like it if he could be in both places, but it is impossible."

INDIA GEARING UP FOR THE FINAL-IT'S ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY:-
  Ever since India played their first Test match in June 1932, the English summer has always been a landmark period for Indian cricket. Team Dhoni stands in the cusp of history as India face England in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy here on Sunday. In a contest where the exuberance of youth will lock horns with the fineness of tradition, the Three Lions will be gunning for their first major 50-over international title in their own lair.

England, bidding for a first major one-day international title, looked in fine form in defeating South Africa by seven wickets at The Oval in Wednesday's first semi-final.

"I think they are a very good side, like each and every side when it comes to the Champions Trophy, which means all of them are strong enough to beat anyone on that particular day and win the trophy," Dhoni said.

"England are a very good side. We have played quite often in the last couple of years so we know the same amount about them and they know the same about us," added Dhoni, whose side have eight of their last 10 one-dayers against England, albeit all those matches were in India.

But Sharma, asked if an England top order including captain Alastair Cook, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, known collectively for solid rather than spectacular run-making, was the most dangerous India had faced in this competition, replied: "I don't think so.

"If you are bowling in a good area no batsmen will enjoy playing you, that is what we have been doing in the last five games and we will do the same thing in the final.

"We have played good cricket until now, we don't need to change anything. We will stick to the patterns and our strengths and we will keep doing the same thing in the final."

Sri Lanka skipper Mathews said the toss had been vital.

"It was a bad day at the office, the toss was vital I thought," he said.

"The wicket was swinging and seaming so the batters were finding it hard to time the ball, especially with the two new balls. It was not coming on; it was a bit two-paced and there was a bit of lateral movement.

"It got a bit easier but I thought 182 was just below par. With the Indian batting line-up at least 250 would have been a good score on that.

"We are disappointed and the whole nation is disappointed, but I'm also sure the whole nation and the team is also quite happy that we reached the semi-finals, because it's the best eight teams and we competed against the best.

"Unfortunately once again we choked in the semi-finals against India."

Asked to pick a winner, Mathews said the final was too close to call.

"That's a toughie. Both teams are quite even and on that day whoever does less mistakes will win the game," he said.

Meanwhile Mathews insisted he was not worried by two incidents of anti-Sri Lankan government demonstrators invading the pitch.

"I was not really concerned. We as cricketers are not really bothered about what is happening around," he said.

"I think it was unfortunate there was a reaction today after the Oval game (Sri Lanka beat Australia at the London ground on Monday), but I can't really comment," Mathews added.

UTTARAKHAND-A NEW NAME OF HISTORIC DEVASTATION:-

It's now a grim race against time. With the next round of heavy rains expected on Monday in the hills of Uttarakhand, rescuers have just Saturday and Sunday to carry out a mammoth evacuation of thousands stranded in Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, many of them old or ill, and several without food or shelter. The official death toll has reached 550.

"Yes, we are running against time," admitted ITBP chief Ajay Chaddha whose men and Army soldiers are carrying out a heroic evacuation operation in frighteningly difficult conditions. According to Chaddha, around 1,000 people are still trapped in inaccessible areas of the Kedarnath axis. They are the most vulnerable as they are virtually without shelter in freezing nights and living on hardly any food.

An officer conducting the operations in Kedarnath said some seemed to have already died due to hunger and illness. He said the elderly without food in such hostile conditions would be especially vulnerable. Apart from Kedarnath, which is the worst hit, another 10,000 are said to be marooned in the Badrinath-Hemkunt Sahib axis, while a similar number is said to be stranded in the Gangotri-Yamunotri axis. The numbers give an idea of the enormity of the challenging evacuation operation.

"Rescue work is in full swing," Uttarakhand principal secretary Subhas Kumar told TOI. He said he was aware of the rains forecasted. "By June 24, we should be able to evacuate all," he said, but added, "but it all depends on the weather. After all, a helicopter crashed today (on Friday)."

The road to Kedarnath is virtually non-existent in the stretch between Rudraprayag and Gaurikund, while the road leading to Badrinath is badly damaged between Gobindghat and Badrinath. Garhwal divisional commissioner Suvardhan told TOI that it would take anything between two to three months to restore these roads, making rescue operations entirely dependent on air evacuation.

Preparation for the next two days are also on at breakneck speed with new helipads coming up at Gaurikund and Auli while old ones at Kedarnath being enlarged to let MI-17 choppers land there. MI-17 can carry up to 14 people as compared to smaller choppers that carry only 5-8 people but need larger base to land.

NDRF IG Sandeep Rathod on Friday said that June 22-23 were "key dates" and all the agencies were maximising their efforts to carry out majority of relief and rescue work during this time. "We know that rains may come anytime and the Meteorological department has also predicted rains in the near future. So we are geared up for that," Rathore said.


To ensure quick rescue armed forces too have conducted some daring operations with IAF's MI-26 choppers lifting entire fuel tankers to rescue sites. Earlier choppers had to go back to Dehradun to tank up wasting crucial time and fuel. Also, ITBP jawans have decided to stay back at rescue sites instead of going back to their camps in the evening so that choppers carry back victim in their last trip.

Both Ajay Chaddha and Subhas Kumar said that those stranded in Badrinath, Hemkunt Sahib, Gangotri and Yamunotri were relatively better off than those in Kedarnath because houses and hotels were still intact there (the Hemkunt Sahib gurudwara has not been damaged), although there was shortage of fuel, food and medicines.

Five days and six nights after the "Himalayan tsunami", it's apparent that for tens of thousands trapped in Badrinath, Chamoli, Hemkunt Sahib, in hamlets along craggy rock faces in the bitter Himalayan cold, every moment has been be a struggle for survival.

While around 16,000 people have been rescued by 22 helicopters, including at least 5,000 from Kedarnath and 1,000-odd from Gaurikund and Kedardunga in Rudraprayag, more than 40,000 people are still trapped in various places on the Char Dham route.

Around 10,000 people in Badrinath are trapped without food or water, and images of old infirm people pleading with Army jawans to rescue them from privation and possible death is truly one of the more humbling and spine-chilling ones to have surfaced from this massive tragedy.

The first television cameraman to reach Kedarnath after it was ravaged by flood and mudslide described in bloodcurdling details how the temple's interiors were strewn with bodies. Not all who took refuge in the temple, which got flooded for several hours before the water drained, survived.

"We need food packets and warm covers. The dharamshalas are broken and there's no protection against the cold," said a pilgrim, Dinkar, to a Rudraprayag journalist. Describing the scenes, he said, "There's a stretch of 50 km of broken road. It will take weeks for it to be repaired. The markets here are deserted and there's no food."

Another Hindi newspaper journalist, Manoj Rawat, covering the tragedy, told TOI, "The focus so far was on Kedarnath. But the condition in Badrinath is rapidly deteriorating. There are thousands of people who have to be rescued. How long can they wait?"

Lt Gen Anil Chait told reporters in Dehradun about the difficulties and challenges facing the jawans. "We've sent 10,000 jawans to search and rescue people who fled in all directions when the flood and mudslide struck." Their priority has been women and children, leaving the more able-bodied to bear with the adversities.

While official sources said 331 pilgrims are missing, unofficial sources put the toll to between 10,000 to 15,000 in Rudrapryag district alone.

Uttarkashi district DM R Rajesh Kumar said more than 9,000 pilgrims were rescued and shifted to Uttarkashi relief centre while 11,000 are still trapped in Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines in Uttarkashi district.
